What you pay and when

Summer weeks carry the usual premium, heaviest for frontline apartments with a clear sea view. The real value is the winter let: a monthly contract from November through March at a fraction of the July rate, in a town that stays open. Shoulder season in May, June, September and October sits between the two and is arguably the best time to be here at all. Within any season the variables are distance from the promenade, floor and lift, terrace size and whether parking comes with it. An apartment two streets back is usually quieter than frontline in August, and cheaper, which makes it the sensible default for a long stay.

Who rents an apartment in Altea

Couples and individuals staying weeks or months rather than days. Seasonal residents who return each winter are the largest group, and many come back to the same building year after year. Prospective buyers are the second, using a winter to work out which part of town they actually want — a decision that is almost impossible to make on a viewing trip and very easy to make after three months of walking the same streets. The third group is people relocating who need a base while they search, and remote workers who want somewhere simple with a terrace. Families with several children are generally better served by a house.

Getting around without a car

This is the one part of Altea where a car is genuinely optional. From a central apartment you can walk to the seafront, the markets, the old town and a wide choice of restaurants. The tram stop links you to Benidorm and on to Alicante, which covers most trips you would otherwise drive. Supermarkets sit along the N-332, which is a few minutes by car or a manageable walk without heavy bags. Alicante airport is about fifty minutes by road. If you are staying through the winter and would rather not run a car, Altea is one of the very few places on this coast where that is a realistic plan.

Before you take an apartment

Short lets need a valid tourist licence, and individual communities sometimes restrict them further, so check both. For a winter contract, ask about heating specifically — many apartments here rely on reversible air conditioning, which is fine in a well-insulated modern building and less so in an older seafront block with single glazing. Confirm whether parking is included and where it is. In old town buildings, ask about the lift, or the absence of one, and count the stairs before you commit to three months of them. Utilities are normally the tenant's cost and community fees the owner's. And see the terrace at the hour you would use it.
